School-Home Reading

Research tells us that when parents become involved in their child's learning and families and children work together on schoolwork, their children are more likely to succeed not only academically but in many important aspects of the child's life. We encourage you to be involved, supporting your child in his/her schoolwork and making a real difference!

Through "A Compact for Reading," a program developed by the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education at the U.S. Department of Education, we will work together - families, teachers, principals, and students - to help improve the reading skills of all of our kindergarten through third graders. We will set goals together and use these resources to complete lessons and activities that will allow your children to accomplish these goals.

Some Tips for Working on the School-Home Links Activities:

Start each School-Home Links activity time by reading the gray-boxed note, starting "Dear Family." This note explains to parents the purpose of the specific School-Home Links activity and the literacy skill it addresses.
Next, read the directions for the activity. If the directions are addressed to you, work with your child on the School-Home Links as suggested. If the directions are written to the student, read them out loud to your child, unless she/he can read them alone. Remember, the more a child practices reading, the better reader he/she will become.
